Grossmont NJROTC Hosts Annual Military Inspection

Grossmont High NJROTC Annual Military Inspection
I was present as Grossmont High School’s NJROTC unit conducted their annual military inspection on Wednesday, March 8. The inspection, which requires a thorough review of all internal unit procedures as well as a detailed inspection of each cadet by Commander Rick Jordan, USN Ret.

Commander Jordan assumed the duties of Area 11 Manager last December. He inspected the entire unit, was the reviewing officer for the cadets’ parades, and heard the cadets’ staff briefing before departing. His review of the unit will be forwarded to the Commanding Officer of Naval Service Training Command. The cadets were rated as excellent/outstanding by the Commander.

I was very impressed with the actions of our NJROTC Cadets and thank our Naval Science Instructors, Captain James Iannone and Master Gunns, for the impact they are having on our youth.

El Capitan Student Wins House of Spain's Don Quijote Poster Contest

El Capitan Student Bryan Castillo Rios' Winning Artwork
After reading the novel Don Quijote in El Capitan teacher Noelia Lara's Spanish for Spanish Speakers class, she encouraged her students to participate in a poster drawing contest. The House of Spain in Balboa Park offered a poster contest and invited students from several County schools, including El Capitan, to participate.  The first place winner of the poster contest would have their drawing used on all of the posters advertising the fourth annual "Don Quijote Read-A-Thon" event at Balboa Park’s International Cottages.

Inspired by the novel, student Bryan Castillo Rios drew an amazing illustration of Don Quijote and his esquire Sancho Panza as they prepared to battle the "giants/windmills." Bryan's illustration received first place and was used on all the posters advertising this event.

On the day of the event, people gather on the cottages lawn area and enjoyed the novel Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes read aloud by readers from several schools all over San Diego area. Attendees also received an opportunity to learn about Spain's culture by watching flamenco dancers, viewing exhibits of portraits and eating Paella. This is the second year El Capitan has participated and assisted the House of Spain with this event.

Congratulations to Bryan Castillo Rios for your impressive first place artwork!
