Project Cornerstone Partners with El Capitan Building and Construction Pathway

El Capitan Students Receive an Up-Close Lesson on Heavy Equipment Machinery
In order to educate the younger generation about jobs available to them, Project Cornerstone created a hands-on CTE program. Project Cornerstone is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate students about the importance of the construction aggregates industry through the use of STEM activities.

Project Cornerstone kicked off its CTE program by partnering with the Building and Construction CTE class at El Capitan High School. The program is an incredible opportunity for students to learn about the various jobs within the construction aggregates industry. It introduced students to how materials are made, what equipment is used at a facility, as well as safety, engineering, and interview preparation. This was accomplished through several field trips and in-class activities.

In addition, the companies partnering with Project Cornerstone will offer summer internships to eligible students. We are excited to build on the success of this program and offer it to other CTE classes. We are grateful for the various partners who have made this program possible including the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce and the annual sponsors of Project Cornerstone.

Grossmont Students Attack Hacking Competitions

Grossmont High School Student Hacking Team
It's been quite a banner year for the student hackers and Grossmont High School. In October, the girls won the grand prize at the Cal State San Marcos Hackathon. In November, their app challenge team won for Congresswoman Davis' district and secured a trip to Washington, DC, to present at the congressional House of Code. In March, the school's primary hacking team finished the CyberPatriot competition in 3rd place for the Western Region Silver Division.

On March 25, the all-star hacking team of eight students took third place at the SoCal Cyber Cup finals at the UCSD Super Computer Center. They received a $2,000 check for their efforts. The primary sponsor for the Cyber Cup was Booz Allen Hamilton and representatives were present for the awards ceremony. They are looking to partner with Grossmont High and the University of San Diego Computer Science department to offer some courses on Grossmont's campus to further the pursuit of cyber security.

On Saturday, April 22, a new team of girls competed in the Spring edition of the Cal State San Marcos Hackathon. This group consisted primarily of girls who have never competed in any event like this but are intrigued by the idea and positive experiences of the students that have participated in similar events.

Congratulations to all!

El Capitan FFA Participates in CA FFA Leadership Conference

The El Capitan FFA Dairy Judging Team
This past month, the El Capitan FFA Chapter made its debut at the 89th Annual California State FFA Leadership Conference held in Fresno. This week-long event challenges members to think critically, work efficiently, and cooperate with other members from around the state. The first day consisted of their Novice and Advanced Parliamentary Procedure Teams competing at the State level against other competitive chapters. These students demonstrated proper understanding of parliamentary law.

The following day, members competed at the Fresno Field Day where students competed on teams judging livestock, dairy cattle, meats, floral, and farm records.

Emma Thorpe placed first as overall novice in food systems. Her project included the comparison of different pasteurization methods affecting the outcomes of mozzarella cheese.

Catherine Mellott placed second in animal systems. Her project presented on the differences in dressing percentages between organic and standard broilers. Tyler Dufloth and Trenton Thompson received first place in teams food systems with their project on vitamin C concentration in different fruits. Drew Niccum earned third place in plant systems with his project was on the germination rate and water quantity effect on radish seeds. Drew, Catherine, and Emma placed first in FFA Champion Teams (for Novice Interviews).

After the day of competition, the 89th Annual California State FFA Leadership Conference began. In addition to speeches on the necessity of agricultural education, students Blake Jackson and Anne Signore were welcomed on stage to receive college scholarships.

As the conference drew to a close, the election of the 2017-2018 California State FFA Officer Team was just beginning. El Capitan's President, Blake Jackson, survived the cuts of over 800 members down to the final 12 candidates for State Office. The process included months of interviews. Blake was slated for the position of Reporter against one other State member. Although the votes were not in El Capitan's favor, Blake Jackson's journey to state office served as a model of pure dedication, professionalism, and genuine character. He represented El Capitan's chapter in an extraordinary way, inspiring all of its members to pursue a greater purpose.

Congratulations to all!

Civilian Marksmanship Program Western Regional Championship Rifle Match

Grossmont NJROTC Cadets Calista Zaenger and Cynthia Cortez
Two of Grossmont's NJROTC Cadets qualified for and competed in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Western Regional Championship April 6 - 8 in Layton, Utah. Sophomore cadets Cynthia Cortez and Calista Zaenger are members of Grossmont's Marksmanship Team. They qualified for the match by virtue of their high scores in the National Postal Match held earlier this year.

Both fired their highest scores of the season when it counted the most. Cadet Zaenger fired her best overall score (493) and her best prone score (187). Her steady improvement this year and her experience in tough matches will serve her well next season. Cadet Cortez broke (500) on both days and posted a season high, personal best, and team High (521) on the final day. Her score was only five points shy of the school record, placing her in 32nd place out of 90 shooters at the Layton Match.

Grossmont's Marksmanship Team is experiencing considerable success as well as significant growth. Building on this season's achievements, the team is adding a Precision Marksmanship Team to its line-up next season. The 2017-2018 Foothillers will field three Marksmanship Teams next season, two Sporter Teams, and one Precision Team.

Monte Vista Principal Marietta Minjares and Superintendent Glover with Proud PIQE Graduates
On April 5, I joined Monte Vista Principal Marietta Minjares at the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) event at Monte Vista High School. PIQE graduating parents received a certificate of completion on behalf of PIQE and the California State University System.

It was nice to see parents recognized for their commitment and hard work on behalf of their children’s education. Since its inception in 1987, PIQE has graduated over 625,000 parents in California. In 2016, PIQE San Diego graduated 1,491 parents at 31 K-12 schools.

Congratulations to our PIQE graduates!

El Cajon Valley Welders are Making Waves in the Maritime Industry

An El Cajon Valley Welding Student
El Cajon Valley High School has consistently produced some of the best entry-level welders in the local maritime industry. By recognizing the unique demands of their advisory board members, El Cajon Valley High School regularly consults and works with Trident Marine to prepare welders to their specific industry demands.

Last year El Cajon Valley welding partnered with Trident Marine to teach maritime welding skills to students in high school. Trident staff made weekly visits to the weld shop to train the student welders to meet the military’s demanding welding specifications. Students who completed the program were guaranteed careers at Trident.

Currently there are eight graduates working for Trident Marine on combative warships. These former students are working on America’s most advanced warships, helping to keep them combat ready for the most demanding environments.

In order to achieve the level of welding that is used in these environments, El Cajon Valley has created a three-year Linked Learning welding pathway that emphasizes American Welding Society industry certifications. With the hard and soft skills gained at El Cajon Valley, welders are prepared to enter the workplace directly upon graduation.

With grant funding, El Cajon Valley and Trident have partnered to build a ship simulator in its welding facility. The simulator will be used to further enhance their CTE curriculum by creating a realistic shipboard environment and adding additional maritime specific skills.

Health Occupations Center Spring Donation Drive

Health Occupations Center Students Gathering Donations for Foster Youth
The Health Occupations Center (HOC) focused its spring energy on a donation drive for local foster youth.  The HOC Student Council organized all campus programs to collect spring baskets for little kids and practical items for youth transitioning to independent living.

The baskets were full of games, toys, and candy. Toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other useful items were gathered for the older youth moving into apartments and group homes. Overall, hundreds of items were collected and delivered to a local foster care organization for distribution to youth in their care.

Mount Miguel Street-Painters Teach Middle Schoolers

Mount Miguel Art Teacher Paula Annicchiarico's street-painters traveled to the La Mesa Art Academy last month to teach Mrs. Lindsay's art students how to create their own murals on the ground in their quad. By leading them in a mini-street-painting festival, the Mount Miguel students created an inspirational mural for them, and taught them as they created their own murals.

What's New in GUHSD

I begin this issue by informing you that the Grossmont Union High School District has initiated water testing for lead across the District. In February, 2017, we formally requested testing from the four agencies that serve the District: Helix Water District, Otay Water District, Lakeside Water District and Padre Dam Municipal Water District.

Following the strict sampling instructions set forth by the State Water Resources Control Board, testing has already been completed or is scheduled at all of GUHSD’s comprehensive high school campuses.

GUHSD is committed to the safety and health of our students and staff. We will keep you apprised of all developments and sample results when they become available within the next several weeks. If results indicate the presence of lead above allowable levels, which is not expected, the water agencies and District staff will determine the source of the contamination and take appropriate action.

As we prepare to embark on our two week spring recess, I wish you a safe and relaxing Spring Break. During this time away, it is my hope that our students, staff and families will enjoy some well-deserved rest, relaxation, and quality time spent with loved ones.

As a reminder, Spring Break is from April 10 through April 21, 2017, with school resuming on Monday, April 24.

CTE Student Ambassadors Program

GUHSD CTE Student Ambassadors with Senator Nielsen
The CTE Student Ambassadors participated in a two-day trip to Sacramento to learn more about the legislative process at the State level as part of their leadership development. Students came prepared to share with state legislators about the Grossmont Union High School District schools, CTE pathways, and their experiences as students.

They were able to observe and connect with the issues that our State legislators oversee through committee hearings as well as through individual visits with State legislators. The CTE Student Ambassadors represented GUHSD well and were welcomed by everyone they met throughout the Capitol. They were accompanied by Frank Luera, Work-based Learning Specialist, and Brenda Davis-Landini, CTE teacher and Student Ambassador Advisor.

The students spoke with Assemblymember Shirley Weber before a committee hearing, and met with Senator Joel Anderson's staff, who took them into the Governor's office. They also visited both the Senate and Assembly floor with Senator Jim Nielsen and Assemblyman Randy Voepel, respectively.

Our Student Ambassadors continuously demonstrate outstanding leadership and communication skills, while providing service to their school, the district, and the community. They are passionate about the benefits of CTE classes and are outstanding role models for their peers.
